Museums
One of Belgium’s most lucrative exports is lace and the Musée du Costume et de la Dentelle, located on Rue de Violette, shows this off to full effect. The museum portrays the history and the methods involved in the craft which have been used in Belgium since the 12th century. Spectacular costumes from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries are also on show, depicting how lace has been pivotal to fashion throughout the centuries.
The highly popular Belgian dynasty’s history is portrayed in the BELvue Museum, which contains the Musée de la Dynastie. The story of the country’s Royal Family is told through paintings, documents and other regal memorabilia, with a combination of official portraits and informal photographs. Since 1992 the museum has been housed in the former Hôtel Bellevue located on Place des Palais, next to the royal palace. In 1998 an exhibition dedicated to the greatly esteemed King Baudouin I, who died in 1993was added to the museum.
The Musée des Instrumentents de Musique (MIM), otherwise known as Musée Instrumental, is located on Rue Montagne de la Cour. The collection began in the 1800s when Belgium was given 80 unusual and antique instruments. This number was then doubled in 1876 when King Léopold II added his gift from a maharajah of 97 Indian musical instruments to the collection. A museum to house this great assortment of instruments opened in 1877, and by 1924 its collection had increased to 3300, and was considered one of the top instrumental museums in existence. Today the museum houses over 6000 pieces made up of wind, string and keyboard instruments dating from medieval times to the present day. The most popular exhibits are the prototype instruments by Adolpho Sax, the Belgian inventor of the saxophone, the mini violins and a violin maker’s studio.
One of the most popular museums in Brussels, amongst adults and children alike is, the Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée (CBBD) the Museum of Comic Strip Art located on rue des Sables, dedicated one of the country’s greatest exports. Renowned Belgian creations such as Tintin and the Smurfs can all be seen here, as well as characters from other countries. There are also many fantastic exhibits such as those portraying the process of constructing a comic strip, a compilation of over 6000 original plates, and an archive of photographs and artefacts. The enormous model of the famous Tintin rocket in the entrance hall, and the life-size cartoon sets are some of the biggest hits in the musuem, as is the Comic Library, which contains hundreds of old comic strips, artist’s equipment, biographies, comic novels and photographs.
